Modeling lets designers predict the performance of water distribution systems to solve a wide variety of design, operational, and water quality problems. Manual M32 provides distribution engineers and operators with information on developing and using computer hydraulic models of water distribution systems. Chapters take the reader from basics through data collection, model design, calibration, and applications. The third edition provides new information on hydraulic calibration, transient analysis, and modeling storage tank mixing and water age.

This manual explains the design and use of computer modeling of water distribution systems. Municipal water distribution systems are very large and complex hydraulic networks of pipes, pumps, valves, and storage reservoirs. In order to understand what is happening in the distribution system, the operator can build an accurate and detailed “virtual” model of the system using computer software. Computer models can help the operator uncover problems and try different scenarios to solve the problems, without actually entering or changing the physical distribution system.

M32 takes the operator from an introduction to modeling, through data collection, model design, calibration, and the many uses for distribution system computer models. Results of a distribution modeling survey of US and Canadian water utilities are included, that shows uses and future trends of water distribution and water quality modeling.
